I was reading how the USWNT is a nonprofit chartered by the US government, but (importantly) not controlled or funded by the feds. It would be cool, (though I presume impossible), for example, for the Spirit to be run by the “DC Soccer Federation” which could behave independently as a nonprofit.

Which means the Thorns managed to secure a #3 finish and a semi-final with only ~60% of the available salary cap. (Not to mention like 75 SEIs.) Pretty scrappy!
