Liberal Jew Cub fan. Not sure which has brought me more misery. Also writer, misery TBA on that one. Torontonian by birth, Chicagoan by upbringing, New Yorker by design. Never threw anyone into a gulag.
Haven't smoked weed on a consistent basis in 15+ years. Vaped some, ediblled some. Really just grew out of the whole being high thing. But my current insomnia/anxiety is getting worse and I'm considering getting something to make it stop that is not melatonin, alcohol, or sleepytime tea.

Finished Brockmire. Last season is bonkers, and maybe if I'd seen it when it first aired I wouldn't have found its dystopian nature so depressing. Similar vibe to Search Party's final season, though there it worked bc those people were assholes. Here, I feel I need a spiritual enema.

The answer to this month's "What is stinking up Jacob's fridge?" has been solved by the discovery of a fully leaked bottle of fish sauce. No wonder the blueberries in the crisper tasted more umami than normal.

Hurray, it's 2026, it can't get worse!

(Offered to hold someone's beer, I willingly oblige. He then pulls out a machete and hacks both my arms off. The beer, magically, does not fall. He replaces the machete in its scabbard, takes the beer, sips it, tells me, "ah, that hits the spot" and leaves.)

For those who claim to miss the halcyon days of George W's reign of nothing to see here, today's events in oil rich Venezuela should make you tingle as if Dick Cheney mumbled your name whilst in full hex mode.

"Thanks for ruining the planet, Boomer!" spouts a younger generation currently down with the twin environmental disasters of crypto mining and AI.

Stranger Things, bittersweet ending. Not because of anything that happened. It's bittersweet because it's over. Because it ended. You know you've experienced terrific storytelling when you feel a deep sense of loss when it is over. You want more but there is no more. Except in our own imaginations.

One of my goals in 2026 is to chip away at all the great films I have yet to see, though today I am probably going into Manhattan to check out Is This Thing On? or The Secret Agent at Angelika. Still one of my fave theaters, especially when the F/D train rumbles 'neath my butt.

Rule 3: Don't post angry. Hulk smash. Hulk don't post.

Rule 2 of new social media me: if you secretly root for the death of another human being don't make it public. It's unseemly. If said person does kick said bucket, don't dance in the street. It's in poor taste and gives ammunition to said deceased person's supporters.

Rule 1 for new social media self: No virtue signaling. Just because I recycle, am not racist, believe in climate change, democracy, the efficacy of vaccines, and a woman's right to choose does not make me a hero or a good person. If I am good, it is because of how I act day-to-day to others.

So none of the below has happened. Though I am making my way steadily through the second hardest book ever written by James Joyce. I think I will be rejoining the toxic douche-o-sphere come 2026, but with the caveat that I will not be a douche. I am going to try my best at menschiness. Try.
bc the social media echo chamber has become even more toxic than normal and bc I'm finally gonna read Ulysses and bc I want to start my new novel, I'll will be leaving social media until 2 of the 4 conditions are met:
1. Read Ulysses
2. 200 hours worked on novel.
3. Peace on Earth.
4. 1st book sold.

I often have to remind myself while speaking with another person not to make it about myself, especially when the other person is talking about death.

For NYC mayor, my No. 1 is Brad Lander. I don’t know the rest yet. I know who I’m NOT voting for so that’s easy. Ranking the rest…ah, crazy ass democracy!!

See y'all tomorrow.

Last week someone said to me, "Reading and writing, man those are lost arts."

No, they are not arts. They are habits, pastimes, hobbies. Most of us possess the rudimentary skills, we simply don't employ them beyond 240 characters of meme filled BS that drain our attention spans. Like this, I guess.

2016 taught me I have to keep my emotions in check when it comes to Il Douche aka Don Cheeto aka Lady Marmalade. But of late i feel less a modern day stoic and more a stone cold Vulcan with icy green blood in my veins. And yeah, sometimes I just wanna scream. Or eat ice cream. Maybe both. Same time.

The amount of being on I had to deal with this past weekend is still wearing on me. And while I usually look forward to Wednesdays to see people in the office, honestly, I could do with another day by myself.

Listened to audiobook of Dexter Palmer's VERSION CONTROL read by the brilliant January LaVoy. I'd read this book years ago and loved it. One of the best novels about time travel (that is not really about time travel). Funny, touching, deeply philosophical without being didactic. Highly recommended.

The Lawrence of Arabia score is the best film score of all time. And most streaming services cut both the overture and intermission which is sacrilege.

One problem of Blue Sky is realizing (more so) that lefties can be just as dim witted and mean spirited as their righty counterparts. The anti-semitism still exists, but of a different flavor. Less Chubby Hubby, more Cherry Garcia.
