you’re spot on and where the radiation hits the food is where the food gets warm, so it leaves holes of cold food if your food isn’t being rotated either by the microwave or manually

when heating rice, a neat trick is to put an ice cube on top when heating up! it adds moisture and will keep your rice from drying out

so an oven will get physically warm to heat food. a microwave doesn’t get warm, it has these tiny invisible balls that’s bounce around and will hit the food, warming where it hits. a lot of microwaves will rotate to help solve your problem. you should manually rotate your food every 30 sec or so!
