For those of you interested in accessing U.S. Census Bureau data from data.census.gov during the government shutdown, the Census APIs are still working.

Here is an example of how to access the Census API using both #Rstats and #Python

These “agents” like doing this. They want to do this because it’s a legal way to feed their worst compulsions.

And they’ve been given full authority to do it - verbatim - by Stephen Miller and President Trump.

Breaking news: ICE stops family at gunpoint—smash car window on top of newborn baby.

"I was screaming that there was a baby. But they didn’t care," cried mother.

“I covered my baby with my body—I was so scared he was going to be hurt because glass was landing on him."

TIL it’s National Black Dog Day, which means I have an excuse to share the cutest snoot. Don’t be fooled though, Landra is currently losing her mind because she hears the ice cream truck 😂
Landra the black lab laying on a white and blue striped blanket. The sun is shining and her fur looks exceptionally shiny. She has caramel colored eyes and is looking directly into the camera.

I know I care about data more than the average person, but we should all be really damn mad that the Trump administration is using the shutdown to restrict access to taxpayer-funded government data. My colleague @alexjamesfitz.com sums up the consequences of losing access to that data.
The shutdown is cutting off data you paid for
Some government data portals are currently inaccessible and not being updated.

Thread:
I love puzzling on how to visualize layered info, the design of coding categories/time/connections, but when I don't literally 'see' a picture of the outcome in my head it becomes an uneasy feeling. My gut-feeling is often the biggest lead on how a design will land/end up,

SCOOP/UPDATE — The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) instructed *all* federal agencies to send out the shutdown email with NO modifications permitted, a federal source confirmed. Leadership received these orders via email at 1:30pm ET and then reinforced on a 3pm intra-agency call.

BREAKING — Employees at multiple government agencies have received an email from their leadership with text clearly dictated by The White House regarding a potential government shutdown.

So far HHS, Interior, and Social Security have gotten this message, the text of which was shared with me:
Subject: Planning for Potential Lapse in Funding

President Trump opposes a government shutdown, and strongly supports the enactment of H.R. 5371, which is a clean Continuing Resolution to fund the government through November 21, and already passed the U.S. House of Representatives. Unfortunately, Democrats are blocking this Continuing Resolution in the U.S. Senate due to unrelated policy demands. If Congressional Democrats maintain their current posture and refuse to pass a clean Continuing Resolution to keep the government funded before midnight on September 30, 2025, federal appropriated funding will lapse.

A funding lapse will result in certain government activities ceasing due to a lack of appropriated funding. In addition, designated pre-notified employees of this agency would be temporarily furloughed. P.L. 116-1 would apply.

The agency has contingency plans in place for executing an orderly shutdown of activities that would be affected by any lapse in appropriations forced by Congressional Democrats. Further Information about those plans will be distributed should a lapse occur.

The CDC has stopped making telework accommodations, even as many employees don't feel safe at work in the wake of the shooting last month. Read my story with @maya-goldman.bsky.social www.axios.com/2025/09/17/c... Or just read this passage:

Trans rights are not the rights of a tiny minority, trans rights are everyone’s rights to self-determination, control of our bodies, and a society where opportunity and aesthetics are not restricted by sex assigned at birth

You should support and defend trans people because trans people are people

As someone who was diagnosed with IIH that just kind of mysteriously went away after more than a year of fatigue, cranial headaches and pulsatile tinnitus….I think I am in these threads and I don’t like it 👀 Maybe I have more research to do

Both of these upcoming cohorts are sitting at about 1/3 full with a week to go.

I'm really puzzled as to why registration has been so slow.

Somewhat in desperation, there's now the code SIXTY you can use for 60% off registration.

My course about birding & creative code is also secretly (shhhh) a course about critical data thinking.

Which is one of the most important skills you could possibly cultivate in this age of AI and misinformation.

Autumn cohorts start September 23rd... join me?

Why birds & data?
To see the whole picture.
Data is a system, not a thing.
To truly understand data, you need to know how it gets made, how it is changed by the processes of computation, and how the choices we make in representing it affect the stories that can be told.
Birding offers a way to get intimate with this entire system. To watch as our observations become data. To see how they are recast and reshaped by algorithms and models. To explore the many practical and poetic ways we might tell our data's story.
Through birding, data is revealed not as static record, but as a living process of which we (and our feathered neighbors) are very much a part.

Yes! They do great work. I meant the individual author not being on Bluesky. :)

I bought shorts in Cambodia once and that was an eye-opening experience in just how different "standard" sizes are.

Did you read through the piece? The 3D models were a separate part of the research. They asked women to look at the mannequins and pick which one they thought best match their own proportions, and then showed them the actual one. It's different than the parallel coordinates plot I also shared.
jacqueschrag.com
Just look at this incredible use of parallel coordinates to show bust, waist, and hip ratio. Or the fact that they 3D printed mini mannequins to physically show the differences!!! Just brilliant work all the way through. 📊
A chart showing variations in bust, waist and hip ratios for women's clothing sizes extra small through double extra large. Across brands, the same "size" can vary wildly in measurements. Approximately 30 3D-printed mini mannequins representing the size charts.
