I lost my 13 year old catahoula coonhound, Roux, on Jan 20th. The angst of these times makes me appreciate & miss her even more.

Today I am missing my Momma who died of pancreatic cancer in 2009. I am still finding out things about her life even though I was with her from the day I took my first breath to the day she took her last breath. 💜

Y’all, we went to hear #MavisStaples tonight (Charleston Spoleto Festival ). That sister sang! I was expecting some of the bluesy r& b “back in the day songs”, but I was not expecting rousing movement songs. Don’t sleep on her if she comes your way.

I lost my sweet girl, Roux, on Monday. 💔She was a 13 y/o catahoula coonhound with a big personality. She would go into the closet & gather shoes before she napped—Never chewed them. She knew the #*!% inauguration was going on so she decided to make her exit. Enjoy your people & your pets.

It was my great fortune that Poet Nikki Giovanni made a virtual appearance at the Charleston Literary Festival in Nov 2024. Of the many compelling things she said, this statement about her choice to write about justice & revolution: “it’s so much easier to tell the truth.”
