Watching all the updates on fb. So far my family sounds okay but it gets stronger when it’s dark out. I can’t physically panic or cry about it, nor can I talk on the phone with people about it. Both roads out are unusable. There wouldn’t be a building to go to anyway. Water might reach the school.

first realized I can think in my language at the same time as English 7daysago. Primal screamed. People’s stories are now Iñupiaq thoughts.

then 2 days later, I loudly celebrated 30 hrs of Iñupiaq & broke vocal cord.

now all within one week, my hometown is flooding, maybe the worst or close to it.

Day 5 broken vocal cord: my whole body is still in pain. Sore fm enduring the shock waves of tingles/numbness/nerve pain rushes. It seems the hard part is in the past & my muscles need to recover for the week.

Won’t be able to use my cords till Friday 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’ll prob not use them till next month tho 🥵

They’re inflamed all the way around my cords down my spine. I did a primal scream during a panic at the language camp. And after the week, I was at the bar screaming & celebrating everyone’s hard work. So that’s part of it!

Also, it would take approximately 50-60 intense hrs to break them I think🤔

Haha, don’t be scared! I spent 10 yrs studying & it’s my 2nd intensive wk w speaking it outloud. Trying is GOOD! I’m even happy to be going thru this or grateful. It’ll just make it stronger.

Iñupiaq language is mostly used in the back by the Adam’s Apple! All those muscles back there instead. 🤯

above all else, I am angry at the colonizers’ language, the killer language. my vocal cord wouldn’t have been destroyed if my maternal lineage was allowed to speak and teach our language. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 🫠🫥🫣😳😤😩☹️

Thank you!! I’m in total shock. But I am grateful for it, too. Elders and others around me allowed me to cry and panic whenever I needed to last week. That helped a lot for sure.

the most shocking part (at this point, I can only laugh about it all) is that just by chance, I’ve waited 4 months for a consultation on my jaw. Yesterday, I learned there’s a (rly) slight possibility I’ll need jaw surgery which means my mouth will be literally wired shot for a little while! 🥴😦🫩😑🫥🫥🫥

Anyway, I joked to the dental doctor ladies, “I guess… maybe after last week, I might be able to start saying I can speak the language now, too…. Maybe… idk… but I DID just break my vocal cord for Iñupiatun!” Like, holy shit! 😂

That, of course, they’re all mostly Elders now… aglaan, these days, our generation is working hard at bringing it back.

Last week, at Iñupiaqtun language intensive camp, I realized that my brain can now hear or understand both languages at once.

I’ll be okay. I’m in shock rn & need to focus on healing this broken cord. It’s painful. But, I’m OK. Actually, at a point where all I can do about it is laugh LOL 🤷🏻‍♀️

Made a joke with the doctors this am when they asked if there’s many Iñupiatun speakers anymore or if it’s declining, I explained…

I happened to also find out that I might need jaw surgery for TMD this morning. That will be a long process, too.

announced it on all socials & am still so new to Alaska Blue Sky (AKBS 🫨🤣) that I just realized it needs to be shared here -

I broke my vocal cord(s) from spending ~30 hours in Iñupiatun, my Native language. It’s a long, long story.

But, I can’t really think, talk, read, listen, etc very well.
