likely lead to a proper first episode being made from the ground up, but I absolutely do not understand what led to the decision of changing Dave's character that much.

It feels like they needed him to be a sort of guide character that foregoes actual writing in favor of replacing the narrator.

I can agree with you on Sunshine, I personally dislike that game a lot, I only brought it up because of the beam jump in Astro Bot.
Regarding Odyssey, I agree with your assessment but disagree with the conclusion, I liked being able to choose how to play it and the openness of it.
To each their own.

Another suggestion that just came back to my mind is MainFrames, by @assoupi.com.
Only the demo is on Steam as of yet, but it's set to release in 2025, I would highly recommend checking it out to see if it's for you.

On that note, I highly recommend you give Nine Sols a shot.
It's not purely a platformer the way Astro Bot is, which I think is a great commendation to make to AB as that doesn't happen often these days.
Nine Sols is inspired by Sekiro and the more classic 2D platformers.
But you probably know it.

Sorry, the comment was entirely directed at the other guy who responded to me saying "you can tell who hasn't played the game" as if I was going to comment on something I didn't experience myself.
I agree with your other comment, we should promote other great games rather than argue with each other.

What I disagree with is telling anyone who thinks it's not entirely deserved for it to win GOTY that "clearly they haven't played the game."
Astro Bot deserves praise for being able to draw from great classics of the genre and expanding on them.
I don't think it's on the same level as wt inspired it

I think you're stretching what I said out very thin.
I don't think there's anything controversial to Astro Bot winning. I think it's not entirely deserved, that's it.
I understand being a fan of something wonderful and that will hopefully lead to more platformers being inspired by it.

What I disagree with is saying it's entirely deserved, when many much more innovative games in the same field were not awarded, and the other candidates were either not even entire games, or simply felt out of place.
Astro Bot simply comes out as the better one to have made it on the list, to me.

I don't know, I felt like I was playing a great ode to the 3D Mario games, more than an entirely new game, even though it was a great experience.
Do not take me wrong, I'm glad that a great platformer was finally awarded, considering again that the only other one ever is SMG.

I did play it and I did like it, sorry to disappoint you.
