I actually think the main reason it got PG-13 instead of R is that most of the violence is directed at alien creatures and androids so none of the blood is red.

The scene they tell Carol that theyre trying to save her and compare her to a person who is drowning reminds me so much of Christiana who claim they want to "save" you by getting to convert to their version of Christianity that requires you to be cishet.
