Lily Dunn's 'Into Being' is a milestone text in the art of life writing. I'm looking forward to chairing a discussion with her at @rilch-ljmu.bsky.social next month. It will be a great evening about how we raise raw personal material and make it powerfully universal.

Just read @jakecampbell88.bsky.social 's excellent 'Between the salt and the ash'. It chronicles his pilgrimage around the passionate places among the passionate people of the North East. A place I still think of as hyem.

Thanks! These are great things to know about. The way the activity faces, as you put it, is really what interests me — i.e. moving away from this idea of the rural as a blackwater periphery. Also, doesn't have to have a professional element, but I know what you mean.

Sharing again for afternoon crowd.

This is an urban-based study, but now I'm living in the countryside, I'm increasingly aware of the dearth of opportunities for writers away from metropolitan areas.

Does anyone know of any work in this area: to promote networks of writers in rural communities?

Article I co-wrote with James Annesley has been published by Creative Industries journal. In it, we discuss the North-East's literary ecology (how contemporary writing happens & is supported, basically) through the prism of New Writing North, England's largest regional writing development agency.

'A must-buy for lovers of the extraordinary poetry of William Martin [...] These verses are exquisitely spare yet depthlessly rich in their vision and musicality.' – Jane Pikett, The Northumbrian, on Marratide: Selected Poems (edited by Peter Armstrong & @jakecampbell88.bsky.social).
The photograph is of the books page of the June/July issue of The Northumbrian magazine pictured beside a copy of the late William Martin’s book Marratide: New & Selected Poems. The cover picture is from The Book of Kells, c. 800 AD.

Btw, I meant that I'd also read the Guardian article on Conduit Books. I expect you're getting a lot of nonsense pushback. Keep gannin'!

Read both pieces with interest & – dare I admit this? – approval. I agree: we need publishing to be a broad church. As a father to a small boy, I want to think of him being able to read great male (and female)-authored books. So, more power to you, Jude. This feels to me like a timely initiative.
