Trailer for the very first episode of Heartbeat.
Trailer broadcast before Inspector Morse on Wed 8th April 1992…Heartbeat premiered that Friday the 10th (odd to think of it on any day except Sunday, but it didn’t move to Sundays until S2)

Ah, Sunday mornings in the 90s…was there anything better than relaxing in front of UK Golds double bill of Doctor Who and Blake’s 7.

A quick look through listings suggest this particular double bill was on the 4th December 1994.

I remember after UK Gold showed it for the first time, DWB received a number of letters praising it and they commented “is there anyone out there who’s seen The Gunfighters recently and doesn’t like it?”.
It was such a good time to be a fan, all those old episodes gradually becoming available.

It’s hard to underestimate how much the opinions of so few people really shaped fandom. For me (like with so many in the 80s) it was Peter Hainings A Celebration book with its reviews by Jeremy Bentham which became the standard opinions for stories we couldn’t see.

Day 22 of Advent, and perhaps a lesser known strip, but chosen because it was always one of my favourites. From Whizzer and Chips, debuting in 1981, Store Wars drawn mainly by Jim Watson

And one here from Roger’s longest running artist, Robert Nixon who was artist in 2 runs from 64 to 73, and then from 1984 until his death in 2002 (though he’d stockpiled enough strips for his work to continue being published into 2003)

Day 21 of advent, and today it’s Roger the Dodger. Debuted in 1953 drawn by Ken Reid, and there’s been many different artists over the years, so there’s 2 posts for todays entry
Examples here from 1959 by Gordon Bell
1975 by Tom Lavery
1976 by Frank McDiarmid

Not part of my comics advent series, but rereading old Buster comics from the 60s, the choice of celebs that have strips based around them is quite varied…for example Professor Jimmy Edwards, Charlie Drake, Benny Hill and Freddie “Parrot Face” Davies.

Day 18 of Advent, and for a little change of pace we go back to Buster and one of the longer running Adventure serial strips which they had a lot of in the 60s and 70s.
Galaxus, the thing from outer space ran from 66 to 74, drawn by Solano Lopez

Originally drawn by Ken Reid, as a kid of the 80s it was the Robert Nixon strips which I remember, though this is from 1976

Day 11 of advent. Yesterday I posted a Sweeney Toddler strip drawn by Tom Paterson, but it was originally created by Leo Baxendale. In a relatively short stint at DC Thomson lasting about a decade, he created some of their most notable characters including “The Bash Street Kids”
