On the other hand, some things may not be possible with gdalcli alone, and also -- it is less useful for exploratory spatial data analysis. (2/2)

Great question. Yes, I think your explanation (low-level sf/terra alternative) is very good. In short, it allows to do various operations on spatial files without reading them into R (and thus, it may require less code and be faster); (1/2)
