They're red because they were still red on the combined Mini-Con in the cartoon. The "error" was the cartoon accidentally using the Autobot head as the Decepticon one and vice versa, and Hasbro had to update the toy to match - the purple paint was presumably just to make him seem Decepticon-ier.

This evergreen stuff includes a redeco of ROTB Smash Changer Primal - if you don't own the original and this hits retail at a reasonable price, I can't recommend it enough.
It's a genuinely magical play experience! Kōjin Ōno of "designed most G1 toys" fame considers it a triumph of engineering!

PSA since I've seen this come up again in relation to the A-Level cogged Orion Pax toy - the original Studio Series One Optimus toy was 100% correct to have his forearms and thighs be a warmer silver than his face. He's like that on screen as both Orion and Optimus, and it's not just the lighting!

Was trying to make a point about how much the animation models for all the 1986 Scramble City guys suck, and drew this harrowing look at an alternate reality where the reference material available for drawing Optimus Prime's animation model was just as bad.

Got curious, wanted to see what the Bruticus animation model - the lineart for which actually skews way closer to the toys than any of the individual Combaticons' animation models generally do - would look like if it was coloured correctly.

Watched Underwater as my seasonal horror viewing tonight, a film about evil deepsea fishmen where the least realistic part is that we're asked to believe that this KStew character is straight.

To be fair, if you ignore how it got coloured, it's kind of more toy-accurate than Swindle's robot or vehicle models!

I think IDW raised the bar for new Titan characters unsustainably high with Chela, the giant golden bird who's fucking Metrotitan.
