The food and drink industry has always been an important part of the local economy in West Ham & Beckton and it is still an important local industry.

I caught up with the organisation for food and drink manufacturers, The Food & Drink Federation, last week to discuss the industry.

I recently met with students from Oasis Academy Silvertown.

We spoke about the development of the area and its impact on them, especially about feeling safer travelling to and from school.

They were passionate and engaged and it was great to hear their perspectives.

I met Women’s Aid at Labour conference & heard about the children who’ve been put at risk or killed by perpetrators of domestic abuse.

I support their campaign to ensure agencies & courts put children’s safety first when looking at access and to ensure they’re also protected from domestic abusers.

Appalled to see another attack on a place of worship.

This will cause huge worry in communities across the country.

The rise in violence targeting people based on their religious faith is deeply concerning.

Hate & racism have no place in our society

I met the British Airline Pilots Association to discuss more opportunities in the industry for women & people from working class & more diverse backgrounds.

I want to see kids in my community not just growing up watching planes at City Airport but ultimately stepping into the cockpit to fly them.

I caught up with Dementia UK this week and talked with them about the importance of an increase in dementia specialist care and their valuable Admiral Nurses service.

Horrendous news from Manchester today.

My thoughts are with those affected, the local community and all of the wider Jewish community.

Good to speak this week on the need for increasing recycling and ending the throwaway society as the Government develops its circular economy strategy.

The first of the new DLR trains have entered service. Lots of new features including air con, more accessibility and fully walk-through trains. 🚝

Keep an eye out for them as more go into service over the next weeks and months.

In September, me and the team have helped constituents with a range of difficulties.

Some housing successes were getting support and assessments for multiple constituents facing homelessness. This included securing a safe place for someone who has been rough sleeping.

Good to catch up with Prostate Cancer UK in Liverpool. I worked for them about ten years ago, they do great work.

I support their campaign for a screening programme so we can get early diagnosis and protect more men from prostate cancer.

As a former NUS vice president I enjoyed speaking at the NUS #labourconference reception on the importance of the students’ unions and the role they play in supporting the lives of students.

The student movement has also provided formative experiences for MPs and civil society leaders.

A final post for Newham Heritage Month from the very windy Royal Victoria dockside.

Thank you to everyone who has engaged with the posts on social media. I’m sure there are stories that we have not covered this month so please let us know if you have any ideas.

Abbey Gardens is now a community run green space but it was once an abbey visited by Henry III and King Edward VI

Any evidence of the abbey was gone by 1906 when ‘the Plaistow Land Grabbers’ occupied the land in protest of mounting unemployment rates.

Great to chat to Pancreatic Cancer UK about accelerating earlier diagnosis for patients with #pancreaticcancer.

Interesting to try the pancreatic cancer breath test and hear about how it can help patients get to early diagnosis and treatment.

Thomas McCluskey, Edith Bridgestock, Thomas Murrell and Pauline Murrell were killed and many of their neighbours were injured and without accommodation.

The collapse of Ronan Point is a tragic part of the history of Newham that should not be forgotten.

The 1889 dock strike was a key event in the industrial history of East London. The striking dockers were ultimately successful in securing the ‘dockers’ tanner’ and had gained the sympathy of the public for their cause.

The Pump House is just next to Royal Victoria DLR which makes Freight café a perfect spot to grab a coffee on your commute.

It’s also the host of Royal Docks Originals’ Pump House Pulse Jazz Nights and ‘The Blue Sunset
