I have two parents, four grandparents, 16 greats, 32 great-greats, 64, 128, 256, and so on. After 40 generations, only about 1,200 years, I have more than two trillion ancestors. It appears humans have been on the planet for around 200,000 years. That's a lot "trace back to" possibilities.
