Born in the 60s, grew up in the 80s. Redundant bookseller (still bitter), work in a school now. Notts based. I mostly like books and music.
We go to Lewes relatively often as our kids both live in Brighton and we have idly talked about whether we could afford to move there (my wife's a counsellor and I am an ex bookseller with a grey beard). Spoiler,we couldn't

'I don't need a shower, I'll have a bath when I get home ' is a genius line imo

Bet he loves the attention though
January 23, 2026 at 2:52 PM
Fuck him. He obviously thinks books are somehow important without understanding how and why and likes the sound of his own voice more than he likes bookshops

This record. The perfect match of the sound and the meaning for me. I want you is especially beautiful and terrifying
January 18, 2026 at 9:23 PM
Absolutely. I also have on repeat the BBC dramatisations of Agatha Christie and Dorothy L Sayers for the same reason

The le Carre and Holmes are both brilliant. I listen to them repeatedly

The android version rolled out over a few weeks so for a while my wife and I had differing versions. She was living in an imaginary place called Harlequin in Notts where I have now apparently moved. It still seems to be the most accurate forecast though, despite looking worse

An album should fit on one side of a c90, ideally with room left over for the b sides of the 2 singles taken from it

I quite like that they enjoy sharing the memories but there is something a bit melancholy about the possibility that they have already had their best years. Actually that's not melancholy that's really depressing! Nice thoughts as I arrive at work in the pitch dark pouring rain...

True for us but maybe another perspective is that when my kids (early 20s) get together they reminisce about what they did, read, listened to, watched when they were at primary school.

I imagine that, like me, you would semi-obsessively calculate how old you would be when the year 2000 finally came (32 1/2 for me). If only we had known

First record I ever bought...
January 8, 2026 at 1:34 PM
But I don't think Buzzcocks would have been the same without him?

John Maher?
January 7, 2026 at 9:40 PM
2 out of 5?? God help us all if they set a difficult one
January 6, 2026 at 6:28 PM
Ha! When I looked at the answers today I could imagine my bemusement would be shared widely

My son is at his girlfriend's parents for the first time (in Suffolk). We spoke to him last night when it looked like they were just finishing up the Xmas dinner and he told us they are having another full roast dinner today (same people). Definitely surprised us!

Me too, as an early Xmas present to myself. Inventory is an amazing work in progress and I have read or reread half a dozen books this year based on the podcast.Merry Xmas to all @backlisted.bsky.social and all your listeners.

A deeply strange book!

I used to work with someone who self releases a couple of albums and he shared this video with me as representing the life of the indie singer songwriter

The album is my record of the year (the record they couldn't have made in 1985) and the first time I saw them this year went straight into my top 10 gigs.

I hope you don't mind a very late reply, I'm catching up. Another lovely piece, thank you. My memories of The Loft are more generic growing up ones without the sadness of your bereavements, but they still mean a lot.

We saw him in Nottingham. He's a star

Going to echo the other replies in that it is Wilco as they, and I, have apparently changed more over the years. Listening to Son Volt feels more like listening to and loving Uncle Tupelo in the olden days. PS doesn't MJ Lenderman remind you of Son Volt (in a good way)?
