We don’t have to do this. But a longterm lobbying effort says killing people with cars is fine and attempts to stop it are communism. The opposing effort is growing but has so much catching up to do.

So much of this is immediately downstream of policy choices that are, in the barest sense, easy to do differently. We just don’t. There are lots of pressure points that make it a bit more complex than that but it doesn’t change the simple fact: we are CHOOSING to kill people with cars. Regularly.

This is obviously true but the origin isn’t just some people being lighthearted, it’s a received wisdom about algorithms downgrading content that overtly reference violence, traumatic events, or swearing. Maybe accurately or maybe not but it’s a rational response to incentives.

It's some of that, but I think it's a bit different. Politicians often value depth over breadth of support prior to the GOTV phase of a campaign. Engagement becomes resources later. And I think social media's smaller but super direct dopamine hit version feels too good. The likes are so validating!

Been thinking lately that pols being online has on the whole been a disaster. Social media was pitched as *& feels like* a way to connect with the public, so they draw specious conclusions but shortchange actual connection. Weren't always great at it before but couldn't fool themselves so easily.

Well okay yes but it is definitely true that the key to a good marriage is to never ask your partner to modify any behaviors out of respect and affection for you, both partners should only ever work on things that bother them, for themselves.
