"What a blessing it is to love books. Everybody must love something, and I know of no objects of love that give such substantial and unfailing returns as books and garden."

'Dreamers seldom wake
To find their dreams come true;
But He touched is inside
And we became alive,
All in His own sweet time...
He's prepared our hearts
For one another.'
- Pablo Yoder, 2012, p. 243

One of the most difficult books I have read this year. ✅✅

Sad and beautiful. Tales of parenting, war, heartbreak, love, betrayal. Sensuality and survival by four African female sex workers in Belgium.

"Lagos was not a memory she liked to dredge up. She tried to think instead of hurtling towards a prophesy that would rinse her life."

I've often returned to this book since I first read it 20 years ago.

"Among my people, life does not start at birth. When I asked my mother who I was before I was born, she told me: 'You were my father. That is why I call you him... the naming was a mere confirmation.'" (p. 3)

This line: "When I was a few days old,.my mother brought an old man to my room to offer his good wishes... 'Oh, Martha, he said.. This child will be great. The child is going to lead.'" A prophetic word that was fulfilled. Nice read.

"Kindergarten teachers often understand the craft [of teaching] better than those of us with PhD's. Students in lower grades don't care what grad school you attended or how many books you've written, but they quickly sense whether you are real, and respond accordingly." (p. 7)

'Live in paradise without destroying it.' ✅✅
They say Chief Niwot’s curse still clings to this place: once you fall in love with the beauty of the Boulder Valley, you’re doomed to see it destroyed by those who come after.

The statue is a reminder to try to live in paradise without destroying it.

Maybe less curse, more prophecy.

"On a dark night, you could hear the ghosts crying; the ghosts of 300 women and children killed by the soldiers."

Every settler on the Turtle Island (North America) should, as a duty and out of respect, read a book by an #Indigenous author.

Mother is an irreplaceable pillar. Scholastica is bandoned by her mother. Life gets messy: rape, murder, revenge. The story chronicles her life from childhood to adulthood in the first person, with themes that are not often talked about: incest. The victim regains her voice.
