I did the same about 2 months ago. It’s been enlightening. I did , however, buy an iPad to use when I WANT to look at social media vs. reflexively checking it throughout the day. Usage way down, but it’s used when I choose now which has been good for my life.

The soldiers look so uninterested. My local town Boy Scouts march in better time. I don’t blame the soldiers. I think it is indicative of the forced nature of the celebration.

Yes you will. After you have comforted them from the nasty social struggles of middle school, and the asshole cliques of high school, and the challenges from (hopefully) making to through college. There is a moment when you hug them, and exhale, and realize they made it. And all will be ok.
