the workers returned from their lunch break to find an elaborate labyrinth drawn into the wet concrete. each worker found within the grooves a small segment of what had been missing from them. and, as they filled the pattern and releveled the surface, they felt it slip away again. none would survive

I built a sandcastle on the beach with my girlfriend once. it was not a very good or carefully constructed sandcastle. that wasn't really the point. it was a marker to show that we had been there. it had collapsed by the time we passed that part of the beach on our way back to the car. that was nice
