Since privatization has come up recently, here's my detailed explanation of Social Security benefits from a while back. Hopefully, it makes it clear why privatization makes no sense and would be so destructive.

You, as an individual, do not have an "account" with SSA where your FICA contributions have been saved for when you retire. It's not at all comparable to an investment account.
