It’s can be hard to shift a mindset like that, but really rewarding. And ultimately more satisfying too - when you look for the good in the world, and how to be that good in the world, it gives you stakes in things in a good way.

We watched The Goonies over Thanksgiving weekend and discovered it’s a great Hanukkah movie because the Jewish character mentions that his attic is only full of Hanukkah decorations! That sealed it for us!

I agree. If you have to believe in an afterlife to motivate you to be a good person, that says a lot about you.

Nope. We’re all tired, busy, stressed, but we have a responsibility to each other and to the world. Be good people. Make the world a better place.

Reminds me of the Jewish story of the two folks having an argument, so they asked God to give them a sign, then ignored the sign and made their own decisions!

Yes to this. So many people seem to want to seem edgy and cynical, but it’s actually really cool to be authentic and kind and just try to make people’s days better. No need to be snarky or angry for no reason.

Yeah, if there even is an afterlife. I don’t worry about it too much - I just try to be a good person, take care of those around me, and do what I can to make this world a little bit better. It’s not about accolades or rewards, just responsibility to the world.

Exactly this! Judaism cares way more about leaving a good legacy and a better world. Our social responsibilities to the world and each other. Whether or not we do it for god or an afterlife is an afterthought often.

Yeah, plus my wife and I BOTH have birthdays coming up between now and mid-January (mine is Saturday!) and of course those are just extra opportunities!

My coworker asked for a wishlist from me for my boss, something like an Amazon wishlist she could easily send to him. I’m also hoping for some ps5 games or a board game. Same with my aunt - we usually just ask for household items but added some board games this year!

I think I’ve only played a couple games, and finished neither, that released this year. I’m currently playing through Clair Obscur and Baby Steps and I love both. I’m sure Clair Obscur will sweep the awards, and I hope more people embrace the rage of Baby Steps!

Reading Things Fall Apart and also The Handmaid’s Tale in college was instrumental in helping me to see the realities of the world and forcing me to confront the conservative beliefs in which I had been raised!
