BOOKWORM: Chapter 1 💕
a comic thread 🧵

#bookworm #jandriNSFWart #nsfwcomics #comics
Cover for chapter 1 of BOOKWORM!

Olive sits at the counter, surrounded by stacks of books. They look up from the novel in their hand, with a bashful look on their face. A sparkling Brooke dominates the background, gently resting a cheek in her hand as she softly smiles.

BOOKWORM, CHAPTER 1: SUGGESTION

iirc he refused to perform a scene of product placement in his return as Steve Martin in Godzilla 1985 because he argued it would cheapen the principles of the story being told
jandri.bsky.social
Also, that’s objectively the inferior version of the film, but in Burr’s defense that guy *absolutely* understood what movie he was being inserted into, even if the American distributor did not
jandri.bsky.social
Also why tha hell would I recommend you watch KotM first
jandri.bsky.social
Every time I mention that you should watch Godzilla (1954), like five people pop in to specify that “actually ☝️ you should watch the original Japanese version.” There’s a distinction yes, but if I wanted to recommend the Raymond Burr cut I would say “watch Godzilla: King of the Monsters (1956)”

My soul for tights that don’t rip

I love them both equally and for wildly different reasons
jandri.bsky.social
I’d argue that the original Japanese cut is even more accessible than the Raymond Burr version is these days, thankfully. I’d also argue that the latter is still worth seeing at a later point, if only for comparison’s sake.

I’d argue he’s still very much The Bomb in Minus One, but that doesn’t mean the film isn’t allowed to have its greater narrative focus elsewhere.

Is that what that was? I thought my pants were on weird
jandri.bsky.social
Weird response, barking up the opposite tree here. Please enjoy your dimensionless media

This is true, I could have just said “queers love him for being queer”
jandri.bsky.social
I’ve been casually on the hunt for his cookbook!
jandri.bsky.social
Queer people love Vincent Price because he represents being very obviously and villainously gay and having everyone around you act accordingly as if that’s normal and completely expected of you. Icon shit

It’s why I can’t necessarily agree with the notion that later films like Minus One capture the *exact* same spirit- even if Yamazaki reframes Godzilla as the villain, he looks too cool smashing shit for it to have that same impact, imo. Monster movie =/= horror film, at least not always

Even the depiction of Godzilla himself is singular, amongst 30+ other films. The way he attacks at night, silhouetted against a dark sky and out of reach of even the lights/flames at his feet. Allow yourself to be immersed in the concept, and the presentation is honestly really spooky.

There’s so much anxiety when he’s not onscreen, and so much real terror when he is- such a romantic and immediate metaphor for something awful and horrid and very real, and that threat casts its shadow over these really somber characters who are trapped under the weight of unthinkable decisions.

The original Godzilla (1954) is absolutely a horror film, but I can’t say that about any of the other films. Consider putting it on your October watchlist if you’ve never seen it.

This one is KILLER, I love how it’s lit

You are THE resident vampire lady artist around these parts

Without the SOCOM, this could be either Solid or Naked Snake

See a vampire, post a vampire

I shoulda drawn little bite marks on her neck, that woulda been cute
A lady vampire with short black hair leans forward and smiles at you, showing off her teeth.

imo, the original Godzilla is definitely horror- to this day, I think it’s got the scariest presentation of Godzilla himself. It has the most palpable sense of terror and melancholy than any of the sequels.

I’m extremely well-versed in Ju-On, but “Ju-On 2” is what it says on the cover for my R1 DVD release of the 2003 film, so that’s what I often default to calling it. Interestingly enough, the movie stills on the back of the case are mistakenly pulled from The Curse 2, which has always bugged me.
