Parent and community engagement in learning (not just schooling) is an important - vital - lever for reducing inequality in society as well as reducing inequality in educational outcomes. My work around this can be found here: www.swansea.ac.uk/staff/j.s.go...

That looks amazing! This pattern is SLIGHTLY similar but not really challenging at all (though I used Cat Bordhi's cast on, like all the others suggested...) www.ravelry.com/patterns/lib... I wear mine rather quite a lot!

Here’s a cute version of a Moebius wrap for those with a young attitude. This one is short, with a rounded shape and a hood! Three sizes are included.

They underpin EVERYTHING.
And libraries, of course.
In fact, strangely, most of the apparatus of the university!

Who'd have thought? :}

Says the owner of three degrees probably considered 'Mickey Mouse' - though I very much doubt some of those throwing around the terms could deal with, say, Wittgenstein, Knowles, Aquinas, and the cast of thousands that got me here... (or is Uni Prof also useless?).

Keep studying. Keep learning. Keep thinking. Keep reading - especially things those in power tell you NOT to read.

I'm intrigued, though - education, teaching, is hardly highly paid. Is it one of the degrees for the chop? In a situation where we already have a recruitment and retention crisis?
And what about nurses, early childcare workers...? People one really wants to be careful, critical thinkers?

I'm not going to link it - you can read the news yourself.
But we *need* people with sociology, anthropology and media degrees - they're the ones to help us think critically about society, the media and ourselves (though I can see why some would not want that to happen).

There is a concept of 'procrastaworking' - one is doing work but perhaps not the work one should be doing... (she says, ignoring the half finished powerpoint open in another window...).

There is a particular fear which was unknown to previous generations - 'Did I forward the email to the wrong people?'.
I've never made that mistake but the fear... it is a real thing.

I dislike both narratives.
VC's pay is not going to touch the sides of the problems and the problems are not VC's pay.
And having come into academia from admin, I agree. The divisions don't help - they fracture collective work and bargaining!

In Things That Make Me Happy... Husband, in cleaning out stuff, came across the MS of my first attempt at a doctorate. It never went further than a first draft - 'more research needed' in a country other than my own, when I had an 11 day old second child, wasn't happening.

It's one reason I try to put pictures of authors on slides I use (though to be fair the one I use of Gramsci is a bit intimidating...).
And this whole thing can extend to men telling women authors *about their own work*. Yes, I know - I wrote it, kthanxbye.

This is a fabulous story, thank you! With absolutely no authority to do so at all, I'd like to thank you on behalf of all owls....

It is! Supporting new scholars, new students. I'm very prone to point out that my generation has got us into this mess, so, no pressure, but it's down to them to get us out...
They give me hope - the early career scholars, the students, the teachers.
Most people are OK.

They cried. We all cried, from memory. It was an excellent thesis, the degree was well deserved, and there was discussion of humour in the thesis so it seemed appropriate. :)

You may have noticed a certain muppet theme in gifs I use. This is deliberate. I have a huge amount of time for the muppets and Sesame Street.
And yes, I did once (with agreement of the other examiner) play this clip to a PhD candidate as a means of relaying our decision).

There are a number of immutable laws of the universe:
* The easiest way to find typos is to hit 'Submit'
* The cat will always need attention when you are least able to give the cat attention
* And the one I just proved - the easiest way to find something, is to replace it.

Dear self,
If you get up early (for you) on a Saturday because you've not finished the powerpoint for Monday's teaching and want to get it posted to Canvas, it helps to, y'know, POST IT, once it's done? Perhaps, just maybe?
