This one might be of interest to #NavalHistory Bluesky. The Norwegian Coastal Administration has released an underwater 3D photo scan of the wreck of the German heavy cruiser Blücher, sunk in the Oslofjord in April 1940. Super cool!

The mystery of medical diagnosis!
Anyone: Why are there suddenly so many AHDH diagnoses?
Dr. Jen: Same reason there are suddenly more stars after we built telescopes.

So there's an EU-funded campaign to get millenials to eat potatoes and - I swear to Jesus I'm not making this up - it's slogan is: "Europe's favourite since 1536."
A screenshot of a website that says "DISCOVER THE TASTY VERSATILITY OF POTATOES! Europe's favourite since 1536." banner ads say "funded by the european union" and "enjoy - it's from europe."

Bought a pair of varusteleka high waisted pants a while back. Best pants ever.

Only issue is that at least with my body shape suspenders are sort of necessary, otherwise they fall too far down. I like suspenders though, so no problem.

- Not adopting fuel injection for their engines. Similar to jets, fuel injection systems (or pressure carburetors, however you want to call them) had been developed at the RAE long before the war. Calum Douglas has an interesting lecture on it at www.youtube.com/watch?v=zktw...

That is not to say Britain didn't make mistakes. Some of the quite large, even. On the topic of aero engines, say:

- Spending a huge amount of £££, time, and elbow grease to try to make sleeve valves work. A developmental dead end if anything.

The generally poor financial situation in the interwar years, and Britain being with its back against the wall in the early-mid WWII meant that projects with more immediate application were prioritized.

All true, however in defense of Britain:

It's easy to say in retrospect how revolutionary turbines would become. Not as easy at the time. It was quite unclear whether turbines would ever become efficient enough and last long enough to be worthwhile (high-temp materials, turbine aerodyn).

How Britain royally messed up its world advantage in jet engines.

I’m not an aviation historian but as a defence analyst there are clear lessons in this tale, which may repeat themselves

Everyone knows Frank Whittle invented the jet engine (?)

Not all flowers and rainbows though. If my understanding of Dutch history is accurate, one of the big triggering factors behind the Dutch revolt (aka the 80-years war) was that the Dutch were very unhappy with the cruelty of the (Catholic) Inquisition.

really enjoying all the people trying to explain the bible to the pope today

Today, more than ever, we must return to the heart, the center of feeling and emotion, the locus of freedom. Though it includes reason, the heart transcends and transforms it. Only by returning to the heart can we undergo a true ecological conversion that transforms our personal

Larson put Goodall into a cartoon (you know the one), Goodall was amused, Larson got to visit a research institute and hilarity ensued.

With alt-text.
Gary Larson cartoon incident
One of Gary Larson's Far Side cartoons shows two chimpanzees grooming. One finds a blonde human hair on the other and inquires,
"Conducting a little more 'research' with that Jane Goodall tramp?"(114) Goodall herself was in Africa at the time. The Jane Goodall
Institute thought the cartoon was in bad taste and had its lawyers draft a letter to Larson and his distribution syndicate in which they described the cartoon as an "atrocity". They were stymied by Goodall herself: when she returned and saw the cartoon, she stated that she found the cartoon amusing. (115)
Since then, all profits from sales of a shirt featuring this cartoon have gone to the Jane Goodall Institute. Goodall wrote a preface to The Far Side Gallery 5, detailing her version of the controversy, and the institute's letter was included next to the cartoon in the complete Far Side collection. 116 She praised Larson's creative ideas, which often compare and contrast the behaviour of humans and animals. In 1988, when Larson visited Goodall's research facility in Tanzania, 115) he was attacked by a chimpanzee named
Frodo. 114)

🇲🇩 Moldova, you’ve done it again.

No attempt to sow fear or division could break your resolve.

You made your choice clear:

Europe. Democracy. Freedom.

Our door is open. And we will stand with you every step of the way.

🇮🇹🇪🇺🇺🇸Former Italian PM Enrico Letta warns Europe is “becoming a colony of Wall Street”, - Le Point

Europe is falling behind US and China due to its fragmented financial, energy, telecom sectors.

“It’s now or never to finish EU market integration by 2028. Europe loses sovereignty every day we delay.”

See the 2024 Letta report, presumably no big changes since then.

Also Draghi published another big report in 2024.
