Today, my etymological doublet series is coming to an end with an episode on German, on request of several people.

The orange German words on the right have the same origin as the blue ones on the right, but they took a very different path.

The English word ‘blue’ is a horse of a different colour.

While ‘blue’ is related to the words in its Germanic sister languages, such as German ‘blau’ and Swedish ‘blå’, it took a different route.

Its Germanic ancestor was loaned to French, where it became ‘bleu’, and then borrowed into English:

This is such a crying shame, and so short-sighted. But there it is.
