Turkestan Shrike, also known as Red-tailed Shrike, is a very rare visitor from Central Asia to the UK. Along with the closely related Daurian Shrike it was once considered one of the sub-species of Isabelline Shrike.

This species was once known as Fan-tailed Warbler and years ago was predicted to breed in the U.K. This summer breeding eventually took place on the Suffolk coast.

This gorgeous bird is found in lowland tropical forests in South-east Asia where it is very difficult to see despite its plumage. It is often first detected by its haunting, whistling call.

This elegant bird of prey was always a scarce summer visitor to the U.K. being at the edge of its breeding range in Europe. Breeding numbers declined until the last breeding took place in 2019.
