there were stale danishes

and cigarette smoke
reminds me of pennsylvania winters
with cheap beer and crooked patios
and hoodies and dirty white sneakers

so that i didn't see it as brown
or perhaps even a floor at all
until i was back with a mask
and a handful of trash bags

and the smell of hazelnut coffee
reminds me of church
with fake smiles and soft greetings

and going back every summer
with a new set of friends
until i found one set of friends
when we were old enough to realize
the water wasn't blue

and brown reminds me of
my grandmother's living room floor
covered up by an aged rug
and even older dust
