Cassidy brushed damp hair from Mayah’s face, fingers trembling. “Stay with me. Five things you can see. Four you can touch. Come on, May.” Her voice pitched calm, trained, though her own pulse thundered. When Mayah finally blinked, lips moving soundlessly, Cassidy nearly sobbed with relief. “There you are. You scared the hell out of me.” She cupped her face, forcing eye contact. “Tell me what you saw. Please.” Mayah’s head shook weakly, tears streaking down her temples. “Celeste. she…I—-I can’t.” Cassidy’s fear hardened into steel. “you’re not just seeing her anymore. You’re inside her. If you don’t tell Brent—-“ “I can’t,” Mayah rasped, recoiling. “He’ll look at me like my mother. Broken.” “Then let him be wrong.” Cassidy’s tone sharpened, fierce and pleading all at once. “I would rather he doubted you than bury you. And if keeping quiet means another girl vanishes—-“ She gestured at the cooling spill across the floor, Mayah’s trembling hands, “then you’re handing him the win.”

“You know,” Derek said after a moment, “most people get written up on their first day. You managed to cause a full-scale existential crisis. That’s efficiency.” She huffed a quiet laugh. “I’m really not good at normal introductions.” “Yeah, I noticed.” He leaned back, studying her. “You look different from what I expected.” “Different how?” “I don’t know. Less…haunted-house, more library-at-midnight.” She blinked. “Is that a compliment?” “Working on it.” Another silence, this one gentler. He stirred his coffee, though he hadn’t added sugar. She traced the rim of hers with one gloved finger. Finally, she asked, “Why are you doing this?” He shrugged. “What, coffee?” “Being nice.” He met her gaze then, grin fading. “Because I’ve seen what happens when people aren’t.” Her chest tightened. “You think i’m broken.” “No,” he said quietly. “I think you’ve been through hell, and you’re still here. That’s not broken.”

That’s Not My Name by Megan Lally

Genre: YA Psychological Thriller

- This was my first read by Megan Lally and whoo it was great! It’s fast paced and filled with suspense. It’s twisting, chilling, and emotional! The epilogue was gut wrenching for me. I highly recommend it!

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

Genre: True Crime, Nonfiction

- It’s a nice slow-paced, well written, informative book. You can tell Capote did his research. It’s a good book if you’re a fan of true crime!
