Years ago my mother used to say to me “In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant.” Well for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant.

I was in my sixth grade history class. There was a knock on the door, and the vice principal was there. He whispered something to the teacher. She turned around, her face was ashen, and she said, “President Kennedy has been shot.” I felt like I had been punched in the gut.
