I love this question it poses for senior leadership to ask themselves:

“before introducing new dashboards, workload systems or performance schemes, ask a simple question: ‘If this mechanism were the only thing staff knew about what we value, what would they infer?’”

PS: rather than “bodies” I should have said “ideologies” because I think this is a problem of imagination as much—or more!—than it is one of direct control or influence.

… sold itself out to consultant and University administrative bodies, to the point of its current all-but-admitted dissolution, because otherwise it could have become the singular site for a true meeting of academic freedom in North America.

It’s a shame the MLA will be in the US for the foreseeable future—likely well past my eventual retirement in a decade—because many of us will naturally refuse to travel to a fascist state.

But it reminds me how angry we should be that the Federation of Social Sciences and Humanities in Canada… /3

There were other rejuvenating moments: on one panel, a PhD candidate (not naming only b/c I worry the content of this thread could rebound on them) brilliantly taught us about literary and activist responses to uranium mining, which rewired parts of my brain. 2/
