Ardea herodias

Despite being huge, great blue herons weigh about 5 or 6 pounds.

On of my local favourite birds.

I finally have a decent photo for #woodpeckerWednesday and all I see is "pube" in the Latin name. I may be 37, but I'm also 12

With a Latin name like that, I'm not surprised it's a jailbird!

The shortening days are really hampering my bird watching time... Do I really need a day job?

This is one of the great egrets of my life.

It was probably raised by nuthatches 😜

I see woodpeckers move upside every once in a while too. I'm sure there are other exceptions as well

Merlin tells me that great blue herons are present year round. Where are they in the winter? They migrate right? Am I crazy? They don't like snow?

They're cute, but invasive here.

Just a nuthatch doing nuthatch things... The only birds that climb trees face down.

For me, the other socials have become more addicting but less substantial... Bluesky isn't getting its hooks in me the same way, which as a user I LOVE! But the flip side is businesses and other accounts trying to make conversions from eyeballs may prefer to addict me to their content.

Dolichovespula maculata

The bald faced hornet is actually a yellow jacket wasp and not a true hornet.

Does this count as stolen valour?

Animals adapt to specific niches, cormorants are an example of a specialized predator.

Which is why they look so goofy in other contexts! What a derp

Amazing photo. Many things came together in this shot, not just the perfect timing of the wave. Great work!
jasonslivingroom.bsky.social
Is that a splashing wave I the background? Really adds to the beautiful composition

Thanks! I had great models to work with 😜

It's hard to walk past monarchs without taking a million pics. Stunning!

I'm making my yard more inviting, in the mean time enjoying these wild ones.

Is she the prettiest mallard in Toronto?

Hmmm. Not sure. I guess I'll have to keep #birdwatching to find out!

Stumbled into a family meeting... These juvenile waxwings didn't seem to mind my presence, but they did want me to feed them 🤣

Note to self: don't walk through buckthorn. If I do, don't spray myself with alcohol.

Did I learn the right learn?

Totally worthy of giddiness! What a great shot
