yeah, OU (not the more famous OSU) is in athens (not the more famous athens) and miami u (not the university of miami, whose logo probably everyone in america has seen, not in miami) is in oxford (not the one you're thinking of). upper sandusky is 50 miles southwest of sandusky.

yeah "how it looks" vs. "how this is pronounced in a more well-known context" is an interesting distinction

oh no i just realized something embarrassing: when i said all of that i was actually thinking of miami university. ohio has too many place names that are shared by other, more famous places and i end up getting them all mixed up.

yeah i always get pissy when people not from/not living in ohio make fun of it (we're allowed to though). athens is nice! i've only been there to go to stuff at OU (once for a weird nerd summer camp thing in 7th grade, once years later to visit a friend who was going there)

yeah my part was nice-ish (see initial post) but, you know, still ohio

What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately?

how quaint that we used to dread everything we have to buy or use becoming "smart". oh you don't like your washer collecting data on you? that's cute, now it does that and also makes critical behind-the-scenes operational decisions based on trillions of dice rolls

a thing that's kind of similar to this to me is how everybody rolls their eyes at 90s gen x anti-consumerism (presumably because it falls short of anti-capitalism) when that was so much healthier and more principled than what we have now

i'm seeing a headline that starts out "nicole kidman's bottomless" but surely the rest of it is cleaner than that

i just want to back up to the first thing this person said. we know exactly how AI works. people made it on purpose.

i mean, his desire to leave the country is predicated on the idea that a) democrats will win back at least the congress if not also the presidency by 2028 and b) they will choose to punish anyone at all, or even reverse anything that has been put in place. so, you know,
