So, I actually think this trope is nonsense for a couple of reasons. First of all, a lot of the time, people's values don't change, society just changes and they don't. Second, sometimes (not always) people's economic interests changes during their lifetime. But that's happening a lot less nowadays.

You know what's a sign of privilege? Being able to pretend there is nothing beyond your nation's borders, and somehow your little country exists in a hermetically sealed bubble, not effecting or being affected by, anything outside of it.
