Fledgling robins are the best. Don't you think? #ringing #birds
A fledgling robin with orange adult feathers beginning to show on its chest, being held by a ringer in front of a garden scene.

Many thanks to my co-authors John Quinn, Gabrielle Davidson @drgdavidson.bsky.social Michael Reichert @reichertfroglab.bsky.social and Jordan Cuff @jordancuff.bsky.social . Also remembering Bill Symondson who I really enjoyed working with and who would have been pleased to see this work out there.

New publication! 🚨

If you're looking for a paper on what great tits eat then this is for you! 🦋🐛🐞🪲🐦

We looked at variation in diet using DNA metabarcoding and found lots of differences between adult and young birds and between habitat types.

Schematic of the structure of the paper. We looked at dietary differences between ages and sexes, seasons and habitat types. We looked at the identity of prey in the diet and the number of dietary items.

PhD opportunity with me (RSPB) at Sheffield Hallam combining ecology (building-nesting birds esp. Swift) + building design & planning (Net Zero goals & retrofit). We need a strong student interested in both! Is that you? url.uk.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/cNyjCR636C... Please repost.

I remember Rebecca giving a seminar when I was in Penryn @universityofexeter.bsky.social on burying beetles and it was excellent. A very well deserved award. #ASABWinter2024

Second most studied species in the field is of course the great tit! 🐦 #bestbird #phdthrowback

We could be losing a lot of scientific evidence due to it being published in non-English languages. Also likely to be reflected for species with no English language evidence.
An incredibly important topic from Tatsuya Amano.

A really important talk from Antica Culina on making research open and FAIR. #ASABWinter2024
Antica stands in front of the lectern in the lecture theatre. On the screen is a number of photos from Antica's fieldwork.

Great to be at my first winter ASAB. Really interesting plenary this morning on how researcher's perspectives influence our knowledge - particularly looking at females in evolutionary biology. #ASAB24

Fascinating #ASABWinter2024 plenary talk this morning by Malin Ah-King, tracing the history of perception of females in evolutionary science. It took surprisingly long for researchers to discover active female sexual strategies♀️

Her book on the topic here: link.springer.com/book/10.1007...

A repeated pattern of male-centric investigations first
Loss of acquired knowledge
Undermining the authority of certain knowers
Widely acknowledged citation hierarchy/taxonomic ignorance
