Here were some of my notes on the intellectual scaffolding surrounding that black hole at the centre—the Lakatosian ‘hard core’ to the conservative intellectual project, all orbiting that invisible, unstated core premise: ‘fuck you, gimme’
* Everyone always acts in their self-interest. If someone claims otherwise, that they wish to help others for no personal gain out of a sense of solidarity, empathy or mutual self-interest, they are lying. To care for and love the Other is weakness, and is naturally obliterated from existence whenever it should arise, since the Other, acting in their self-interest, will take what they want from you and burn whatever remains. If a soldier sacrifices himself by jumping on a grenade to protect his friends, it is only through self-interest; if a random passer-by bum-rushes a mass shooter, it is explained away through a form of self-interest; there cannot be, by definition, a Good Samaritan. There is no moral virtue, and those that advocate for moral virtue do not believe in moral virtue, but in receiving social credit for expressing care for others. * Life is nothing but winners and losers, the strong and the weak, wolves and sheep, the superior and inferior, the deserving and the undeserving. The cream always rises to the top. Existence is zero-sum and we as humans are always in competition with one another for limited resources: for one class or group to succeed, another must fail; there are winner and losers in both arguments and fistfights, life is competition and domination both across and between societies, and compromise and collaboration is a myth, perhaps little more than a temporary ceasefire while both sides ready themselves for battle; life is little more than red in tooth and claw. Law exists only to temper this violence and universal self-interest into an orderly state. To believe otherwise is to be a naif and a fool. * Humans fit into simple, rigid, inflexible hierarchical categories, expressed by Scruton as: ‘“Equality” is a mysterious and irrational ambition. … elevated to an absolute value, the idea of equality is empty and unappealing. … People are unequal in intelligence, strength, looks talent, health, and original social position—in other word… the structure of social institutions (there are leaders and followers), the structure of the state (the state directs the citizenry), the structure of history itself (an empire will rise and fall, only to be replaced by another empire; a political leader will assume the position, then be replaced by another leader, and so on) and the structure of the universe itself in a revealed ‘nature’ or ‘natural law’: God is in control of the universe; for the more secular-minded, God is replaced by the immutable laws of nature itself, which are revealed by ‘science’, and elite ‘scientists’ lay down the immutable laws of nature, and dictate the lower structures: what is a description of reality becomes (or always was) normative, since what is, ought to be. Through analogical reasoning, the father is God is the state is the leader is the empire is the brain. Reality itself, by its very nature and essence, is necessarily hierarchical and immutable, and therefore this is how we must order our lives. In no world, not even in Heaven, will the last be first, nor the first last. * Fission and social/psychic tension is caused by inferiors undermining the natural order of the system. Roger Scruton, for example, notes the ideal society is built on obedience: ‘obedience, in its turn, is the prime virtue of political beings, the disposition which makes it possible to govern them, and without which societies crumble into “the dust and powder of individuality”’ (https://newcriterion.com/article/why-i-became-a-conservative/ ). How is the universe imperfect, full of this dust and powder, since these structural inequalities are good, and produce order and regularity across time and space? In other words, what best explains any violation of this natural order? Imperfection and violation of this natural order must be explained, and perhaps is the key locus of the explanatory content of the conservative intellectual, and must be constantly maintained by society, since they are natural, necessary… * The strong face constant threats of psychic/physical infection from without and degradation by forgetting what makes them strong: a perceived attack on one part of the system is not just a moral evil, it is in fact an attack on the entirety of the system. A strong, rigid system is constantly at risk of infection from without by the physical bodies of inferior, disgusting invaders or 'vermin’ (or foreign ideas), dressed up in the fancy language of Roger Scruton as defending ‘culture and institutions in the face of the challenge presented by mass migration’, or ‘the belief in sacred things and the desire to defend them against desecration’ (How to Be a Conservative), or infiltration and subversion from within by fifth columnists and demonic intellectuals. Consider, for a moment, how Scruton describes Foucault: ‘a satanic mendacity’ that employed rhetorical strategies ‘invented by the Father of Lies’ https://newcriterion.com/article/why-i-became-a-conservative/. Correspondingly, the strong must constantly maintain their own bodies and minds, since if they ever accept aspects of the weak, the elites will become like the inferiors, and will succumb to their vices. The strong must constantly be vigilant and protect order at all costs. Men can never show any weakness, never admit they have lost an argument, never admit they are wrong, never show weakness and constantly suppress and repress any allegedly ‘effeminate’ aspects, and never succumb to debauchery and softness. Be ever-vigilant! Hard times make hard men, but weak times make weak men! Therefore, times must be hard, for everyone, forever. * The strong deserve the world, and best explanation for failure of the strong is usually not due to any deficiencies, since they are strong, but is due to a stab in the back: when those at the top fail, that is, when there is an apparent violation of nature, those at the bottom are the most likely to blame—there is no moral luck explaining success for those at the top; What …
