My jaw hit the floor when I first heard this. It could have been recorded the year I was born. Sounds perfect, shimmering, echoey vocals, ideal musical accompaniment, top notch production. No way you can’t be charmed by this record.

Gillian Welch & Dave Rowlings - Woodland
Perfect slice of Americana (country done by folkies). Harmony duetting, on both vocal and plucked guitar, with appropriate accompaniment. Stunning attention to detail

Ghazal-influenced vocal chamber folk/jazz, marrying east & west with an incredible singing voice. All very atmospheric, hypnotic late night stuff. Quite pleasant early morning too, wafting through the house like it’s the only sound in town.

Number 4: Michael Kiwanuka - Small Changes
Gone is the blistering psychedelic soul of yore, leaving his yearnful, wistful motifs intact. His previous two albums were both JAMAs runners-up. 4th place is like watching Jimmy White lose the snooker semifinals

Meshell Ndegeocello - No More Water: The Gospel of James Baldwin. Probably the wokest record I own (in the original “stay woke, bro” sense). This second album for Blue Note is incredibly polemic, being a tribute to the late James Baldwin's political activism

No. 8 Julia Holter – Something In The Room She Moves
Another excellent production from the reigning queen of art-pop. Julia has a good, normal voice, unlike many art pop contemporaries, making it easier to go with the flow, and enjoy the album experience.

9: Cindy Lee – Diamond Jubilee
2 hour odyssey into memories and emotions; beautiful, forgettable, evocative mood music subtly transporting you to another place. Sometimes weird, never unpleasant, with electric guitar, floaty vocals, mellow discordance.

Number 10: SOPHIE - SOPHIE
First, and likely final, posthumous release from acclaimed producer SOPHIE. This album is largely DESPISED by SOPHIE’s cult following. They’re probably right, but I generally like its minimal ambient/club vibe. So there.

Lady Blackbird: Slang Spirituals
Her debut, Black Acid Soul remains one of the finest vocal jazz LPs of the century.
This sounds like generic middle of the road r’n’b/soul landfill. Music needs to arrest me. This has me filing a complaint.

Best Album I Missed Last Year Award goes to Chappell Roan's The Rise and Fall Of a Midwest Princess. From underground cult figure to Greta "I want to be [left] alone" Garbo in less than 12 months is a very impressive, if world-weary outcome. This is a great pop album.
