Obwohl die Etymologie des Wortes vermutlich mit einem Wort aus dem Aramäischen oder Hebräischen zusammenhängt, habe ich _persönlich_ noch nie gehört, dass es als halbgeheime oder kodierte Anspielung auf Juden oder als antisemitische Beleidigung verwendet wurde.

1) I can’t believe this wasn’t translated into English. All of its predecessors as winners of the German Book Prize were published in English, as were most of its successors.

2) It was made into a not-so-terrible movie.

Leider versenden viele Verkäufer keine Pakete mehr in die USA. Amerikanische Freunde von mir haben in letzter Zeit bei Amazon[.]de bestellt, aber die Pakete sind noch nicht angekommen (wahrscheinlich stecken sie im Labyrinth des amerikanischen Zolls fest).

Fernleihe verschickt aufgrund der aktuellen Postprobleme keine Bücher in die USA, und es gibt nur zwei Exemplare in ganz Nordamerika. Eines ist bereits ausgeliehen, und das andere, das sich in Kanada befindet, wird ebenfalls nicht in die USA verschickt.

Academic books are simply priced much too expensively. No one should pay $120 for a 175-page book. Even with a conference discount of 25% off, it's simply *much* too expensive.

I have finally finished reading Effingers, @nyrb-imprints.bsky.social.

It is an absolute masterpiece. There’s so much to think about with this book.

(I can also see why it was a commercial failure when it first came out in German in 1951. It was a different era in terms of social discourse.)

After reading “Effingers,” if anyone wants to read a real-life, multigenerational epic of a Berlin Jewish family in this era, I highly recommend “The Scholems: A Story of the German-Jewish Bourgeoisie from Emancipation to Destruction.”

No, Britain is fine. I show my students film adaptations of EM Forster novels. However, I’m less interested in the lives of the aristocracy and more interested in the bourgeoisie and the working class.

I should warn you that while it’s a paperback, it’s not short. It’s more than 800 pages, densely printed, with small-sized font.

However, each chapter is only 5–10 pages long. So it can be read in small segments without feeling overwhelmed or lost.

I am genuinely interested in the characters and want to know what happens to them, particularly as I know very well the historical context in which the narrative takes place (namely, German history, German-Jewish history, and Berlin history from 1880 to 1942).

It’s rare that I can say this, but right now, I’m reading an advance copy of a novel, and I cannot put it down. I’m completely immersed in it.

I highly recommend @nyrb-imprints.bsky.social’s English translation of Gabriele Tergit’s “Effingers,” available for purchase on November 11.
