Free speech can be vexing. You want it for yourself, your friends, and your allies. But, in an open society, the other guys get it too. I have written a little essay, with doses of autobiography, and a killer statement by Ortega y Gasset at the end. www.thenextmove.org/p/we-need-fr...

I met Jonah Goldberg when he was a research assistant at AEI (1993-ish?). I enjoyed talking with him then and I enjoy talking with him now. It was a privilege and a kick to be on his "Remnant" podcast. We discuss issues grave and lighter. thedispatch.com/podcast/remn...

For the music-minded, a post about Opening Night at Carnegie Hall. Yuja Wang played the Tchaikovsky Concerto (you know which one). But conducted it, too? Yup. newcriterion.com/dispatch/wan...

This news from California gives me a memory. Two years ago, the New York City public schools made Diwali a holiday. My friend Vivek Dave commented, "If they really wanted to honor Indian culture, they'd make the kids go to school a half-day on Saturday." apnews.com/article/diwa...
California makes Diwali an official statewide holiday
California is the third U.S. state to designate Diwali as an official statewide holiday. The law, newly signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, takes effect January 1.

For the music-minded, a review of "La sonnambula," by Bellini, at the Metropolitan Opera last night. Nadine Sierra, in the title role, was ... memorable. newcriterion.com/dispatch/nad...

Starbucks employees are suing their employer over a new dress code, and the costs it entails. I solicited the testimony of a friend of mine who spent a few years working at Starbucks. An interesting "take" on a common slice of American life. www.jaynordlinger.com/p/working-at...

A waiter, who is also a friend of mine, asked, "Who's going to win the mayor's race?" (We are in New York.) I told him what I thought. He then said, "You know, Jay? *You* should be mayor." Ladies and gentlemen, I'm feeling a draft. Too late to file? #JayForNYC25

Vance in 2022: "We are in a late republican period. If we're going to push back against it, we're going to have to get pretty wild, and pretty far out there, and go in directions that a lot of conservatives right now are uncomfortable with." I am still "uncomfortable." You?

I live in New York — a home of pizza (they say). But I believe my favorite pizza parlor is in Bloomington, Ind., hard by IU. A treasure of a haunt.

Jerome A. Cohen was the “dean” of China scholars in the U.S. He was also a great friend to dissidents and democrats. Jerry has passed away at 95. For The Next Move, the publication of @renewdemocracy.bsky.social, I have written an appreciation. www.thenextmove.org/p/a-scholar-...

For me, Jerry’s passing is not only a profound public loss; it is deeply personal.

Like many conservatives, I have been called a "fascist" by people on the left, for years. For the last ten years, I have been called a "globalist," by others. I take a look at the second epithet, in particular, in a column today. Epithets everywhere! www.jaynordlinger.com/p/globalist-...

It was from Jerry that I first learned about the Uyghurs — that they were being rounded up into concentration camps. He was trying to get the world interested. He was reminded of his relatives — about 40 of them — who were rounded up and murdered in the Holocaust.

Recently, the Department of Homeland Security announced that we were denying entry to three types of people: communists, terrorists, and globalists. "Communists" and "terrorists," I understand. What do they mean, "globalists"?

There is a joke told in Turkey. A prisoner goes to the prison library to ask for a particular book. The librarian says, "We don't have the book -- but we have its author."
