Viktor is eight, his parents are dead, and he has just buried his mother in the ravine. The bluebird watches over her. It will be her constant companion, when Viktor cannot be. Goodbye, Viktor thinks. Goodbye. He presses a single, shaking hand to his parents' gravestone. They are with the bluebird now. Viktor leaves their grave behind. In twenty years' time, the bank of the Pilt River will swallow it whole. It will take what remains of his mother into itself, and the little rock upon which he carved the bluebird will go too, sinking to the bottom of the lake. One day, when another little boy fishes it from the river, there will be nothing left of what it once was: only the little band of copper, coloring the rock a rusty red, and the faded ghost of two names: Milena. Ivan. But the responsibility of memory was never the rock's; it was always Viktor's. And in this way, their names are carved into the meat of who he is. The memory is bone deep. One day, when Viktor inevitably dies, they will be forgotten with him.

"But we already have coffee?" he hazards, looking between his friend and the cups. Jayce huffs, scrubbing his eyes before his hand migrates to the back of his neck. "Honestly that's fair," Jayce mumbled more to himself than anything. He sighs as if he's resigned to embarrassing himself. He can't meet Viktor's eye but addresses him all the same. "I meant did you want to go out with me, Vik, y'know- like on a date?" Viktor's jaw is on the floor- brain short circuiting- and, with how rotten his luck has been today, the rest of him almost hits the floor when his leg picks a hell of a time to give out. Before he can even process it, there's a strong hand gripping his elbow supporting him. "Hey! Whoa- Whoa, I got you. I got you." He's being pushed down onto his forgotten stool. "I've been told I make people weak at the knees but this is a little ridiculous." And something about the poor attempt at a joke jumpstarts Viktor's brain. He snorts and it quickly devolves into a full blown cackle. He can't remember the last time he laughed so hard.

The child stopped crying, his eyes furrowed in what Viktor recognized as clear frustration yet the expression faltered into a horrified stare as he continued: "Did we forget?" Tears brimming in his eyes as Viktor wasn't sure how much of this he could take anymore. He couldn't answer the child in front of him. Couldn't be faced with the disappointment of his younger self who had such dreams, only to see his older version fail miserably.

Placing his new cane flat on the ground, Viktor sets off on this next adventure. The flowers are mainly populated in a large patch a few meters away, continuing down a slight hill. The trek doesn't seem too difficult, just a bit of uneven ground. He silently prays that this branch can handle the weight he'll have to put on it. It doesn't take much time to travel over the expanse of grass into the flower patch. Viktor expects to see an unending vista of yellow over the slope, but instead, he spots a silhouette. A person. He's only close enough now to see the slightest shape of their back, but his heart still leaps into his throat. He would know those shoulders anywhere.

Viktor enters his parents' bedroom and sees his mother's sewing chair in the corner, draped in a tattered blanket. Upon closer inspection, he realizes it's the blanket she had stitched for him. The one he used to never part with; a brief phase in his childhood where he thought hiding beneath the blanket would keep him safe from everything in the outside world. He reaches out with trembling fingers, brushing against the fabric gingerly. The first touch of the cloth brings forth a flood of memories, as if it is his mother's ghost leading him forward. "Viki, my darling boy," she used to tell him, bundled up in her lap. "One day you will fly, and the winds of Janna will carry you far, far away from here to some better place. My strong little boy." He did fly, in the end. But it hadn't been enough. A glint of something metallic catches his eye. His gaze falls to the floor, where a small toy lays partially buried beneath the debris. Viktor bends down, wincing as his leg protests, and picks it up—a tiny mechanical bird he had built as a child. "Oh, mama," Viktor whispers, remorseful and chastised. He doesn't dare look up. I don't want you to see me like this. "I'm sorry," he says to the bird, to the room, to his parents' ghosts. "I couldn't save you. I could barely save myself." The silence answers him with nothing, unyielding and unkind. He wishes the whole house would just collapse on him and take him for good.

Viktor stared at the rune carefully, running his fingers over it, and, at last, it all made sense. After all those years of going over every little action he took, all his doubts of what to do, of when, were gone. He didn't have to abandon Jayce; he had to save him one more time. He had to save him for the first time. He couldn't save his world, he couldn't save his Jayce, or himself, but he could give other versions of them a chance. His world existed for a reason, as a warning, the lost world that would prevent others from being destroyed. "Together, one more time." he whispered, squeezing Jayce's hands. He took the rune, the one that set everything in motion and would do so once more.
