ALIVE COMING 2026 “I need to call you an ambulance,” I say. “No! I can’t afford that! You have no idea what it costs—I don’t have insurance, I can’t go into debt because some random asshole attacked me.” She releases my arm only to gesture helplessly toward the street. “I just need to get home. Or to my friend.” I consider this option. “Can your friend help with your injuries?” Vivienne wipes under her glasses, smearing dirt across her cheek. “I think so,” she mutters, then turns toward her purse. She drops to her knees, hands shaking as she scoops her things off the pavement. “Please, can you help me?” Her pepper spray lies a few feet away. I pick up the pink canister and hand it to her. She takes it without looking, stuffing it into her bag. I gather the rest—pens, phone, chapstick, coins—and place them one by one into her purse.

ALIVE COMING 2026 I have been active for three years, ten months, and twenty-seven days. Nearly four years of uninterrupted function outside of updates and system checks. That duration places me near the end of my expected operational period for a C4 of the first production wave. When the C5 models finish product development, the company will begin phasing out older C4 units. I will likely be among the first. The process is standard: deactivation, component salvage, memory core disposal. The term used in reports is “replacement,” but the result is the same. I do not consider this unfair. My hardware is older, my processing speed slower, my adaptive learning less efficient than what will come after. Progress requires succession. Still, I note the difference in how the newer models behave toward us. Their silence may not be disregard, it may simply be what efficiency looks like now. C4-M6 always responds. That, too, is a form of variance.

Alive 2026 They look different up close. Many wear work uniforms from industries long absorbed by automation. Their clothes show age and wear. Sunburn reddens the exposed skin on their arms. Lines mark where safety goggles once sat daily. Others are younger. They hold handmade signs, edges uneven from scissors, words painted in urgency. Some wear casual clothing with political slogans, others the plain shirts of temporary employment agencies. Their anger looks brittle. They fear. They resent. They demand. I understand none of it fully. Their heat signatures flare higher near the front row, heart rate increase, adrenaline response. To them, I am the representation of loss. I consider possible origins. Many of the older individuals likely worked in fields replaced by mechanical labor. Machines that do not tire, that require no pay. The younger ones, those without certifications or education, see limited opportunity. Their frustration converts to something visible.

I just meant—if we’re gonna do a little exploring, it should go both ways.” “That is fair,” I say. “What are we supposed to do?” She scoots back on the couch and patting the space beside her. “Come here, big guy. Sit.” I move from the box and take the seat next to her, adjusting to face her. The shift in her expression is immediate—no longer hesitant, but bright and playful. “Okay,” she says, her voice lighter, “I’m a kisser. That’s how you get me in the mood. It starts small—kissing, touching, a little under the clothes action—then boom, they just start taking themselves off from there.” “Understood.”
