Luiz Gonzaga (1912-1989), 🇧🇷’s first musical superstar was from Exu, also in Pernambuco’s sertão, about an hour’s drive from Serrita. Gonzaga, a composer, accordionist, & singer was called the “King of Baião” & also played in other traditions like forró.

Here’s Gonzaga performing in Recife in 1976

João Gomes is from the small city of Serrita, in Pernambuco’s sertão, the semi-arid backcountry where the average temperature is 27.0 C (80 F). It’s the land of cowboys & the city is famous for its annual rodeo, the Vaquejada.
Serrita - the Cowboy City
Cowboys celebrate in Serrita. The colorful festival combines culture and religion in the heart of Brazil. Thousands of visitors come from the country.

For the inaugural episode of Tiny Desk Brasil, the young Pernambucan singer João Gomes & his 7-piece (incl. Michael Pipoquinha on bass) perform in studio. This is contemporary northeastern music, based on musical traditions of the region.
