Yeah, well that's a good point. I almost didn't make it past the headline.

The whole story might seem like an obvious retread to you, but for many people I think it'll have lots of new details.

It's got very interesting reporting, actually. (The lede might seem hype-y, but the piece is worth reading.) One thing that jumps out at me is that safeguards are built in last, just before release. Which is bad, and exactly how security is handled in most tech development.

Just wanted to share this graphic from KFF, the green sliver in this pie chart indicates the amount of Medicaid Spending for Emergency Medicaid in 2023. It's (0.4%) of the total Medicaid budget. Undocumented immigrants sometimes receive Emergency Medicaid.
A mostly blue pie graph with a sliver of green to indicate the amount of money spent on Emergency Medicaid - it is only 0.4% out of $860 billion.

This brilliant, already oft-quoted statement:

"AI is the asbestos we are shoveling into the walls of our society and our descendants will be digging it out for generations."

@govpritzker.illinois.gov ACT NOW. The IL State Police who participated in this fascist bullshit need to be fired without severance IMMEDIATELY, pensions revoked, rehire potential removed, and these ICE Nazis need to be removed from our state YESTERDAY.

Well, you were saying that in the old days reporters were just excited about the web. In response, I’m saying that enthusiasm was the default attitude for many technology writers. In our era, fewer journalists assume that technology is always benign, or that people want more of it.
jbeilinson.bsky.social
Well, the web was pretty cool, right?

But I don’t think tech journalists got properly skeptical of Big Tech until around 20 years ago.

I'm a white(ish) man. I also benefit from DEI policies if it means I have the best doctor/pilot/bridge engineer on the job because talented people aren't being excluded any longer. Plus, I don't want to live in a crappy, unfair country.

This is why we fund scientists to study things like oyster slobber even if you don’t think it sounds important

⚠️ Chinese researchers have invented bone glue that mimics how oysters stick to surfaces underwater.

The adhesive can reportedly repair orthopedic fractures in 2-3 minutes, even in blood-rich environments, and is bioabsorbable.

Tons of judges, Republicans as well as Democrats, have been upholding the law responsibly, and without fear. And then they are reversed by the Supreme Court—often without any explanation.

Why not? David French made a strong argument about how telling it was that Trump removed top JAG officers.

Saddam Hussein's Iraq was bad at war. It was good at controlling Iraqis. Russia's not good at fighting in Ukraine. It's good at controlling Russians. Trump is saying what he thinks: The enemy he wants the military to target is Americans.

How about this as the Democratic position:

"Go back and follow every previous appropriations law we passed...USAID, etc.....and then we'll talk about passing a new one."

Like, why should I believe that Congress passing a law to spend money on healthcare means money will be spent on healthcare?

Left-wing terrorism surpassing right-wing terrorism because the fringe-right's agenda is also the president's isn't really an indictment of the left!

Dems shouldn't vote for the funding because it's just theater. They'd be passing a law, and Trump is ignoring laws. Voting for the law would be helping tell the lie that Congress is in charge of spending. Under Trump, it's not.
