This sounds like Internal Family Systems terminology. I think that's such a useful framework.

Love's Executioner (dated now) is the book that made me want to become a therapist. Still remember vividly being floored (at 24) by his elegant "givens of existence."

Do you have Kottler's On Being a Therapist on your shelf yet? Pairs well with Yalom.

I'm personally not sure "anxiety" can be diminished/ negotiated with if it is framed in the language of antagonism. Anxiety is often helpful, and connected to excitement. We work with anxiety in pre- and post- arousal states. Need a game plan for each state we find ourselves in.

Not sure if this is helpful, but when I introduce the notion of mediation to clients, I do it via the concept of diaphramic breathing and then teach "box breathing." "Meditation" (the word) seems to turn a client on or off. Neither response seems excellent.
