In general I think the chapter is highlighting our personal foundation for interactions. What framework do we use? Jesus is challenging our constructs for trust, faith, and depending on God, wealth, status, or ourselves. This chapter forces us to address inconsistencies with our stated beliefs.

This is the fallacy of 'keeping score' of simple actions. Outside goodness can be staged. One would do best to cultivate genuine faith and relationships. A lifestyle will flow from what one believes, and reveal the integrity of individual actions. I believe God, so I act accordingly.

But to their defense... You only left the lines of communication open. You didn't make them talk to you. Plus, why didn't you remind them everyday and twice on Sundays.
