Torterra evolving was never the problem. It was the writing. Ash has worked with slower, defensive Pokemon before, so this shouldn't have been that big of an adjustment for him

It also doesn't help that the writers kinda gave up on this idea and tried to backtrack with Rock Climb to poor results
