Alert Threat Level USA 12 Feb 2025 15:24:00 Persistent threat of tariffs on US imports highlighted by planned aluminum and steel tariffs. On Monday, February 10, U.S. President Donald Trump announced his intention to implement 25 percent tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports to the United States. The tariffs would go into effect on March 12 and as of this writing, there are no reports of any exemptions. President Trump enacted similar tariffs during his first term in 2018 with 25 percent tariffs on steel and 10 percent on aluminum. Those tariffs led to tit-for-tat responses from multiple countries, including the European Union (EU) - which enacted targeted tariffs on American goods. Canada stands to be most impacted as it is the number one importer of steel (around 23 percent) and aluminum (around 50 percent). Mexico is the second-largest importer of steel. Canada, Mexic d the EU have all warned they will likely e aliatory tariffs if the proposed steel and aluminum tariffs go into effect.
