A multi level feeding frenzy on Cape Cod Bay. On the surface there are mergansers. Above are many gulls. And high above are gannets. Occasionally the mergansers have to fly a bit to keep up.

Always something going on in the fridge.
The inside of a standard refrigerator. In the center are four plastic storage bins stacked on each other. On the bottom is cut up pineapple, then a largish one with spring mix salad stuff, then a smaller one with baby arugula. On top is an even smaller one with Luna moth cocoons.

Many monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) fluttering around some Buddleja davidii bushes. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this many monarchs in one place. (Shelburne Museum, Shelburne, VT, USA)

NPS having a little fun at the Great Island walk in Cape Cod NS. (Quite possibly this could be locals making a joke.)
An information sign says “Crane Viewing Area” below a diagram of a construction crane. Behind is a grassy marsh and sky. Looking over marsh grasses and asmall inlet of water (known as “the gut”) you can see an orange construction crane used for building a new bridge.

Went to the movies tonight.

Two #broodxiv northern pharaoh periodical #cicadas (Magicicada septendecim) laying eggs. Sandwich, Mass.

It’s almost the end of brood xiv. There are still some calling but we saw many dead ones.
A black cicada with red eyes is grasping the trunk of a small tree. It is preparing to insert eggs under the bark of the tree. Behind it you can see another cicada on a branch doing the same thing.

A large patch of prickly pear cactus. It has large, green, spiky pads and numerous yellow flowers. Some flowers have passed their bloom and are becoming fruits. If you look closely you may see some bees pollinating the flowers.

The Boston Globe: where the commeration of the 250th anniversary of the American revolution is in the Metro section. (They do have a front page photo and article as well.)
The paper copy of the Metro (or B) section of the April 20, 2025, edition of the Boston Globe. The page is mostly taken up with a photo of the reenactment of “the shot heard ‘round the world” on Lexington Green. There are several minute men laying “dead” on the green as columns of about 40 red coats march. Beyond you see hundreds of spectators held back by low temporary fences. Beyond that is a white church with a steeple. The article is titled “‘It reminds us of the American story .’” The sub hed is “Lexington and Concord mark 250th anniversary.”

It was too cloudy to see the eclipse today, so here are memories of past eclipse from 2021 and 2024.

Pizza night.
Two homemade meat lovers pizzas (sausage, mini pepperonis, bacon). They are on plastic cutting boards which are on a cherry counter. The top one is sliced into six pieces, but two are already missing. The bottom one is fresh out of the oven and not yet sliced.

Nice. We had a nest of these in our front yard a couple of years ago.
