I read a lot and I occasionally, accidentally say something funny.

Reading is political

NK Jemisin's Broken Earth Trilogy has already been mentioned so I have to go with Butler--hot take, Parable of the Sower was her worst book (still great though).

Fledgling is a favorite, but Kindred will always be my #1

Lt Gov Rhoden took over. I don't know much about him, but he's... Not quite as bad as Noem, at least from what I've researched so far.

I really should know of any Democratic nominees, but I don't... The last Dem this state elected was Johnson and I doubt it will happen again anytime soon.

I haven't looked into him much... He's not exactly a beacon of hope, but so far he's no Rhoden or Noem. So, maybe there's the thinnest of silver linings

Aaaaand we get Rhoden to replace Noem.

So there's not even a silver lining.

As a South Dakotan... She's an embarrassment to our state. We're not perfect by any means, but I swear we're not half as bad as she makes us seem.

Second the Broken Earth Trilogy! (and The Hate U Give)

Also recommend The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by Jemisin once you finish Broken Earth

I finally admitted I might have a problem when I seriously thought about getting a full size bed to replace my queen size, "because I can probably fit another bookcase in then!"

Do you like the series so far? I read Unwind years ago and wasn't enamored with Shusterman, but I really enjoyed The Scythe series!

It's SO good. The denoument is soul wrenching, but Silvera always does an amazing job not letting the sad and depressing aspects of the story take over or become overdone

@adamsilvera.bsky.social is amazing, and TFTDATE is no exception.

Once you recover, I recommend More Happy Than Not. My favorite of his works, one of my favorite books of all time.

I cried so hard my right eye was bloodshot for three days... But it was worth it.

Both are emotionally devastating, but unless your mental health is phenomenal at the moment or you're extremely resilient, I suggest starting with Babel. The Poppy War is more... Visceral. Some of it is based on what happened in Nanking during WWII and despite it being toned down for the book...

I loved Yellowface but it was my least favorite of her works (still 9/10). Babel & The Poppy War trilogy are life changing. Must read, modern canon, anti-colonialism that's nearly peerless (NK Jemisin's Broken Earth Trilogy is the only thing I can think of that is close--both LEAGUES above all else)

(whom she doesn't even like) because she needs his recommendation. Very Dante's inferno/the story of Orpheus meets Alice in Wonderland. With any other author I'd be concerned they're taking on more than they can handle in one book, but if anyone can handle it, it's RF Kuang

She's one of my insta-buy authors. I pre-ordered the second I heard about it, didn't even bother reading the synopsis. I love how well she can blend political/socio-historical commentary with an amazing story.

Katabasis is about a PhD student literally going to hell to bring back her profesor

Katabasis by RF Kuang!

I can't wait!

Harrow the Ninth is pretty similar! Refreshing to have actual plot twists that aren't predictable or common tropes. But lesbian necromancers in space are nothing if not unpredictable

This Blinding Absence of Light by Tahar Ben Jelloun, More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera, "We, The Drowned" by Carsten Jensen, We by Yevgeny Zamyatin, In Dubious Battle by John Steinbeck (I know! I know! Nobel prize laureate, BUT very few people have read that specific work)

I didn't think to see if you were on bluesky! (I freshly migrated) I LOVED Unwieldy Creatures. Frankenstein is my favorite classic so I was very skeptical any retelling could do it justice. But you absolutely did--it's one of my favorite reads of the last decade

Thank you! I've read The Book Eaters and The Power and loved them both--adding the rest to TBR!

Currently reading The Address Book Deirdre Mask, highly recommend

Indigenous Continent by Pekka Hamalainen

Love all Jon Krakauer (but favorite is Into Thin Air)

Unfollow by Megan Phelps Roper is a phenomenal memoir of leaving the WBC
