I am reminded, naturally, of G.H.W. Bush’s crusade against my dad for his veto of a flag-burning bill, even though the Mass SJC (our supremes) had previously said it violated the MA constitution. GHWB did many a photo op in flag factories. Just the beginning of this petty nonsense.

Just not true. As long as you pay the "mechanical royalties" to the pub/writer, you can record any previously recorded tune. I used to work for Prince who was forever incensed about Sinead's ability to record Nothing Compares 2 U without his permission, even though he made millions on it.
