I really enjoyed talking to Chris about the histories that shape the current deplatforming efforts affecting NSFW video games! Grateful for him taking this issue seriously. I wanted to share links to some of my colleagues’ work that I mention here:

Porn + games studies pals, please add any of your own work you'd recommend as well! For folks looking for stuff behind paywalls, if you reach out to academics they are generally very happy to share pdfs.

@kendraserra.bsky.social's work here (law.yale.edu/isp/publicat...) explains how “shadow regulation by payment providers has supplanted the legal rules entirely, replacing theoretical community norms with corporate multinational risk, a move that parallels broader shifts in online speech.”

I don't think it's overdramatic to say that we must consider whether we want "working artist" to be a viable prospect in the near future, and how to materially protect the field from corporations, execs, and managers all too happy to automate creative production with AI.

"Every year, many games are disappearing, for various reasons. Every game that disappears from distribution is potentially lost to game preservation efforts. It is particularly worrying when games are potentially vanishing due to external pressure."

If all goes according to plan, the project will involve a survey, interviews with developers and industry experts and two game jams centred on pornographic, sexual, lewd and erotic games. Please share the ads below to students at Canadian institutions who might be interested.

This summer, I was granted funding to study the social, cultural, legal and economic factors that shape the production, distribution, and consumption of pornographic video games (wild timing, I know). Thanks to that funding, I’m hiring three research assistants!

I'm happy to announce the launch of 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕'𝒔 𝑵𝒆𝒙𝒕 𝑱𝒂𝒎𝒎𝒆𝒓? - an interactive resource that provides post-jam guidance to game jammers!

I worked with @jimmunroe.net at GAIN to create this toolkit, which provides advice for jammers interested in commercial, artistic, or experimental development paths.
